Imagine a story about World War 2 where the Nazis won, Churchill and Roosevelt were tried and found guilty of war crimes, and the author claimed this is actually what happened.
Such a book would be laughed about, but hopefully, it would also raise awareness about the true heroes, villains, and stories of World War 2. We'd know ourselves better because of such an otherwise silly notion.
The Da Vinci Code has the same potential. Its notions are, in the light of history, silly. Few serious scholars would confirm the underlying story in Dan Brown's book. This book is, in every sense of the word, fiction. But our hope is that deeper conversations about how we know what we know and why we believe what we believe are the result.
Mark Henderson will be preaching July 16-August 6 on the Da Vinci Code. A small group study will also be available during that time. Our Real Questions class will also be discussing some of the key questions raised by Dan Brown.
